As we approach the end of 2014, it is interesting to review what has changed our view of what UC is all about. I found it most interesting to review the white paper that I wrote for Microsoft back in 2007, when they wanted me to describe my vision of UC in connection with their announcement of OCS Release 2 (now Lync, but soon to be Skype For Business).

At the press conference for Microsoft’s OCS Release 2, Gurdeep Singh Pall referenced that white paper as a framework for where Microsoft was planning to go with OCS. For a few days after that press conference, UC Strategies was getting over 7,000 hits a day from people wanting to know more about UC. You can read the white paper at:


In reading it now, here has been much progress made in business communications technology since then, which is now driving the role of  UC way beyond what I wrote about then. These include:

  • “Cloud” services (Applications, communications, storage, big data analytics, etc.) displacing premise-based technologies
  • Multimodal BYOD smartphones, tablets, and various wearables
  • Video conferencing and messaging
  • Federated presence services
  • Social networking
  • WebRTC and ORTC for “click-to-connect” in real time
  • Mobile customer services becoming a major driver for UC

There are capabilities still evolving, especially in standardization, but the bottom line is that the old view of UC, which focused heavily on voice telephony, is really changed. I do write about some of these changes under a new label of “Unified Business Interactions” (UBI) to reflect the expansion of the original UC perspective.
